Seven FIA Clubs are implementing road safety projects using iRAP methodologies with support from the 2025 FIA Safe and Sustainable Mobility Grants Programme.
In 2025, the FIA Mobility Grants Programme, funded by the FIA Foundation, has been relaunched under a new name: the FIA Safe and Sustainable Mobility Grants Programme (SSMGP). This rebranding reflects the FIA’s vision of being a global voice in promoting safe and sustainable mobility by fostering collaborative action among its member Clubs. The revamped programme will continue to support advocacy initiatives aimed at advancing safe, clean, inclusive, and smart mobility.
The SSMGP is organized around four key thematic areas:
- Road safety interventions for urban mobility: Supporting actions to protect vulnerable road users in cities using tools such as the FIA School Assessment Toolkit, iRAP’s Star Rating for Schools (SR4S), and CycleRAP to guide safe infrastructure upgrades.
- Helmet and Motorcycle safety: Strengthening the FIA Helmet Wearing Programme, establishing helmet wearing coalitions and addressing helmet standards and testing protocols.
- Support the implementation of national/local policies for safe and sustainable mobility around key risk factors: Implementing national road safety strategies, WHO Decade of Action Global Plan measures, and actions to meet national CO2 reduction targets.
- Advocacy events for safe and sustainable mobility: Workshops with policymakers, awareness days on key mobility issues, and briefings for journalists and media.
This year, seven FIA member Clubs have been selected to lead innovative projects using iRAP methodologies and tools under SSMGP:
- Star Rating for Schools (SR4S): Associacao Automobílistica do Brasil (Brazil), Automovil Club de Chile (Chile), Automobile Association of Tanzania (Tanzania), and Palestinian Motor Sport and Motorcycle Federation (Palestine) are implementing school zone assessments with SR4S to advocate for safer infrastructure for children. Since 2021, the FIA SSMGP has supported 32 projects utilizing SR4S. This marks the first time the Brazilian club has implemented a safe school zone project using SR4S, while the other clubs are building on the success of previous initiatives.
- CycleRAP: Automovel Club de Portugal (Portugal) and Automobile and Motorcycle Association of Slovenia (Slovenia) will use CycleRAP to assess cycling infrastructure. Notably, Slovenia’s participation marks the country’s first CycleRAP project led by an FIA club.
- iRAP Star Rating Assessment: Automovil Club de Guatemala (Guatemala) will carry out a road assessment across a 200 km network using iRAP’s Star Rating methodology to evaluate road safety risks and identify priority areas for improvement.
These projects highlight the FIA’s ongoing efforts to improve road safety and mobility worldwide. Through the Safe and Sustainable Mobility Grants Programme, FIA remains dedicated to eliminating high-risk roads and ensuring safer journeys for all.
