The Youth Engagement App (YEA) continues to evolve as a practical tool for empowering young people to identify and communicate road safety risks around their schools and communities. The latest update introduces several new features designed to improve usability, strengthen learning outcomes and generate higher‑quality evidence to support safer school journeys.
These improvements have been shaped directly by feedback from young users, following co‑creation workshops delivered as part of the Empowering Youth for Livable Cities programme.
What’s New in YEA
Guided Onboarding Experience
New users are now supported by an optional, interactive onboarding tour. The guided walkthrough introduces the core functions of the app, including how to:
- Drop a location pin
- Select a mode of transport
- Rate perceived safety
- Add photos and comments
This enhancement helps students quickly and confidently begin reporting road safety issues, improving consistency and data quality from the outset.
Road Safety Knowledge Quiz
The new Road Safety Knowledge Quiz supports learning alongside participation. Each visit to the quiz page presents five randomly generated questions covering topics such as:
- School zones and speed management
- Crossing facilities and footpaths
- Lighting and visibility
- Cycling infrastructure
Correct answers earn points that contribute to a student’s overall engagement score, reinforcing key road safety concepts while encouraging continued use of the app.
Road Safety Champions Leaderboard
To recognise and motivate active participation, YEA now includes a Road Safety Champions leaderboard. Rankings are based on a combination of submitted location pins and quiz performance, and can be filtered by:
- School
- City
- Country
- Date
This feature can support school‑based road safety initiatives by recognising student contribution and encouraging peer‑to‑peer engagement.
Supporting Safer School Journeys Through Data – How YEA Can Power Up Your Road Safety Projects
YEA plays a key role in strengthening road safety programmes by connecting youth‑generated data with decision‑making tools.
- From student voice to evidence
YEA data integrates directly into the Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) platform, helping practitioners and authorities identify high‑risk locations and prioritise improvements where they are needed most. - Meaningful youth participation
The app provides a structured way for young people to contribute their experiences and insights, supporting inclusive engagement with planners, engineers and policymakers. - Engaging road safety education
Interactive features such as quizzes and leaderboards help embed road safety learning within real‑world observation and reporting. - Global accessibility
YEA is available in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Vietnamese, Bahasa Indonesia and Thai, supporting use across diverse contexts. - Evidence‑based advocacy
When combined with SR4S assessment results, student‑reported data provides a powerful, location‑specific evidence base to support investment in safer school infrastructure.
