Tunisia, 25 November 2025 L’Association des Ambassadeurs de la Sécurité Routière (ASR – Tunisia) was honoured today in London with the prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award 2025, one of the world’s highest distinctions in road safety.

The award recognizes the Association of Road Safety Ambassadors’ efforts to establish 30 km/h zones around schools in Tunisia, a pioneering project that places child protection at the heart of public policy.

An ambitious national project based on scientific evidence

The ASR was selected by an international panel of expert judges for its innovative initiative to reduce child deaths and injuries around schools.

Between 2022 and 2024, more than 200 children under the age of 14 lost their lives in road accidents in Tunisia, most of them as pedestrians. Faced with this alarming situation, the ASR designed and implemented a comprehensive program combining:

  • scientific analysis of risk areas using the SR4S (Star Rating for Schools) tool;
  • mapping of black spots in the governorate of Tunis;
  • a major national awareness campaign on speed;
  • the pilot development of three priority schools;
  • and, above all, the institutionalization of 30 km/h speed limits in Tunisian legislation through the revision of Decree 151/2000 in June 2023.

This historic reform makes Tunisia the first Arab and African country to officially introduce a 30 km/h speed limit around all schools.

A rare and exemplary international recognition

Each year, the Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards recognize the most innovative and impactful initiatives around the world.

The ASR program stood out in the “Child Road Safety & School Zones Management” category for its integrated approach combining scientific data, legal reform, community engagement, and cross-sector collaboration.

Tunisian representation in London

The ASR was represented by its President, Ms. Afef Ben Ghenia, and her project team. They presented the results of the program and the prospects for its nationwide expansion to His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to explore avenues for cooperation with the British organization RoadSafe.

The ASR reaffirms its commitment to continuing the rollout and monitoring of 30 km/h zones until 2030 in order to achieve a lasting reduction in child road deaths.

This international distinction confirms that Tunisia is now at the forefront of road safety for children.
