As the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) convenes in Macau this week for its Annual Conference, we recognise the 140 FIA clubs in 99 countries partnering with iRAP to support their advocacy and action to create safer journeys for members supported by the iRAP Methodology and tools.

This year’s conference is welcoming over 500 senior FIA delegates across mobility and motorsport from 149 countries, offering the opportunity to address key initiatives in road safety, sustainable mobility, regional sporting growth, and innovation in transport.

From supporting road safety assessments and implementing the Star Rating for Schools programme, to developing free tools and resources for club members, driving advocacy and improved policy, and rolling out innovative funding programmes for safer school journeys, FIA partnerships are critical to ensuring high-risk roads are actioned and eliminated in local communities spanning the globe.

FIA Clubs, supported by the FIA Mobility Grants Programme, are advancing safe, clean, inclusive, and smart mobility, with CycleRAP, the Youth Engagement App (YEA) and Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) valuable free tools to support their projects.

Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for young people from the ages of five to 29, and FIA mobility clubs are working with iRAP in local partnerships to deliver the Star Rating for Schools programme for safer school journeys.

Clubs are embracing the programme supported by the FIA School Assessment Toolkit and annual FIA Mobility Grants Programme, supported by the FIA Foundation.

SR4S has supported clubs to improve the safety of school zones in Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bolivia, Botswana, Cambodia, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Cyprus, Ecuador, Georgia, Greece, Guatemala, Kenya, Moldova, Morocco, Mozambique, Nepal, Nigeria, Palestine, Panama, Paraguay, Philippines, Slovenia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, Uruguay, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The Automobile Club of Moldova (ACM) received two awards in 2024 for its contribution to road safety – a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award and Vision Zero for Youth Award. This follows the Club’s 2023 FIA President’s Award for its Safer School Zone campaign that drove infrastructure improvements and school zone policy changes including 30km/h limits.

The annual €400,000 FIA Foundation fund for Star Rating for Schools, deployed as part of the Child Health Initiative Advocacy Hub, is supporting FIA clubs in expanding and deepening their projects and advocacy for safe journeys to school.

A number of clubs have large SR4S assessment programs underway, informing lifesaving road upgrades to protect vulnerable youth. For example, the Armenian Automobile Federation (FAA)ACM MoldovaNepal Automobiles’ Association (NASA)EA991 Botswana, the National Automobile Club of Azerbaijan and Automovil Club de Chile have assessed 40, 24, 21, 19, 14 and 13 schools respectively with important recent outcomes. In Nepal, NASA’s SR4S assessments have results in upgrades in 18 of the 21 assessed schools.

AA Kenya played a valuable role helping to build road safety capacity in Africa last October where two interactive Safer School Journey Walkshops, held in conjunction with the Africa Regional Road Safety Seminar, empowered participants to enhance road safety through hands-on learning and data-driven approaches.

Beyond schools, iRAP is also working with clubs to support changes to make roads safer for drivers and other vulnerable road users.

In Australia, the Australian Automobile Association (AAA), supported by State Clubs, have been driving road safety advocacy benchmarking the National Road Safety Strategy, and calling for the transparent use of AusRAP road ratings to increase transparency and evidence-based decision-making in road safety investment. In addition, the Federal and State Government has committed AUD$9 billion to fast track upgrades on Queensland’s main Bruce Highway following the long-term advocacy of the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ).

The National Autosport and Karting Federation of Uzbekistan (NACU) is supporting an innovative project to improve road design standards for CAREC countries, and in particular the pilot countries of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Each year, the Reial Automobil Club de Catalunya (RACC) and Real Automovil Club de Espana undertake annual Crash Risk Mapping of the Spanish and Catalan road networks helping to guide and performance track investment programs in safety.

Automovil Club Del Ecuador (ANETA), Automovil Club De Costa Rica (ACCR), Automóvil Club del Uruguay, Automovel Clube Brasileiro (ACB), and Jamaica Automobile Association (JAA) are working on an important innovation mapping partnership with iRAP.

The Royal Dutch Touring Club (ANWB) has been a key partner in iRAP’s innovative CycleRAP development for safer journeys for cyclists and light mobility users. CycleRAP received the 2025 European Cyclists’ Federation Road Safety Award in Poland this week.

The safety of over 140km of cycling infrastructure has been assessed in Skopje, North Macedonia in partnership with the Auto Moto Association of Macedonia (AMSM), the Automobile and Motorcycle Association of Slovenia (AMZS) will undertake assessments this year, and several cycle lanes were assessed in Lisbon last year in partnership with the Automovel Club de Portugal, with potential scalability to other Portuguese cities.

A pivotal meeting to launch a Road Safety Audits Training initiative was held in March in Zimbabwe. The initiative, funded by the FIA Foundation through the FIA Safe and Sustainable Mobility Grant Program, and awarded to the Automobile Association of Zimbabwe (AAZ), aims to enhance road safety and promote sustainable mobility across the country focused on strategies to improve road infrastructure design and reduce traffic collisions.

Automobile Club d’Italia (ACI) and the National Automobile Club of Tunisia have previously completed large Crash Risk Mapping assessments of 17,500km and 14,800km respectively, to understand the investments and speeds required to save lives and serious injuries in their countries.

iRAP is actively working with FIA Region I, II and IV to build capacity and projects to support safer journeys in the regions.

We warmly congratulate the FIA and club network for their extensive investment and work to promote safer journeys world-wide.

Speaking ahead of his visit to Macau, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said: “The Members of the FIA are at the heart of everything we do, and I am looking forward to being inspired by and connected to them over the next few days, strengthening the link between sport and mobility, expanding our reach, and continuing to impact the global stage. At the same time, we continue to empower all regions through our mobility capabilities, maintaining a central role in leading the dialogue on the future of sustainable cities, safety, and transport.”

The 2025 FIA Conference, hosted in partnership with the Automobile General Association Macao-China (AAMC) and Galaxy Entertainment Group, is being held from 10-12 June.
