As part of UNGRSW 2025, we are pleased to present two new case studies demonstrating the impact of the Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) programme in Moldova and India. These initiatives highlight effective strategies for creating safer journeys to school for children.

Moldova: Transforming School Zones

In Moldova, a collaborative effort spearheaded by the Automobile Club of Moldova (ACM) and EASST (with support from FIA Foundation and UNICEF Moldova) has focused on implementing 30 km/h speed limits and enhancing infrastructure around schools. This includes improvements to pedestrian crossings and road signage. The SR4S tool was instrumental in assessing and addressing risks. These efforts have led to significant safety advancements and have been recognized with international awards.

India: Prioritizing Child Safety

India, which faces a high burden of road traffic fatalities, has also seen positive change through SR4S. The “Safe Schools Secure Journeys” project, initiated by Avoid Accident, in Punjab, involving collaboration with local authorities, 3M, and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), has resulted in key infrastructure upgrades. These include the installation of a footbridge, improved road signs, and speed-calming measures.

These SR4S case studies align with global efforts to improve road safety, including activities promoted during UN Global Road Safety Week. By focusing on safer streets (#StreetsforLife), #MakeWalkingSafe, and #MakeCyclingSafe, initiatives like these contribute to creating healthier and safer environments for children and communities.
