iRAP is looking for a collaborative and enthusiastic person with a passion for safe mobility and experience in road safety to coordinate the global Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) program.
Road crashes are the major cause of death of young people aged 5-24 years old. Around the world, more than 500 children die on the roads every day, many of them on their way to school. Thousands more children suffer life-changing injuries every day. SR4S supports partners in developing and implementing interventions that save lives and prevent serious injuries.
SR4S is an evidence-based tool for measuring, managing and communicating the risk that children are exposed to on a journey to school. It supports quick interventions that save lives and prevent serious injuries from day one.
SR4S has been used at more than 1,000 schools in more than 60 countries. With SR4S, partners can calculate a Star Rating for a road, where 1-star is the least safe and 5-star is the safest. These assessments help guide the implementation of treatments such as safe crossings, footpaths, and traffic calming to slow traffic as it travels through school areas.
SR4S is complemented by the new Youth Engagement App (YEA), an innovative tool that empowers youth to participate in and inform road safety decision-making, and raise awareness about safer roads.
Rafaela Machado has coordinated SR4S since before the program’s official launch in 2020. Rafaela has collaborated with partners across the globe and guided the development of tools and resources that are now used by hundreds of people every day to make roads safer for children. As a result of her outstanding leadership, Rafaela now has an opportunity to join leading road safety donor and advocate, the FIA Foundation, as Programmes Manager.
iRAP is therefore seeking to appoint a new SR4S Coordinator to guide the program through the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030. The SR4S Coordinator runs the programme on a day-to-day basis, with support from the iRAP team. The SR4S Coordinator collaborates closely with Lead Partners, Global Programme Partners and iRAP staff around the world to ensure that technical, training and communications aspects of the programme can support large-scale action on road safety. The SR4S Coordinator role is a full-time contract position. The role can be performed remotely (the candidate will require their own ‘home office’ facilities including a reliable internet connection, an up-to-date computer and a safe and appropriate environment to work in), and/or embedded within a partner organisation. Flexibility to travel frequently and work with the time zones of lead partners will be essential.
