India’s National Dialogue on Road Safety for Children

IndiaRAP Technical Manager Jigesh Bhavsar presented at a National Dialogue on Road Safety for Children Workshop in Delhi today, marking the occasion of National Engineers Day in the country.

The one-day workshop drew leading road safety stakeholders committed to reducing road traffic deaths and serious injuries in the most vulnerable youth road user group.

The forum presented keynote addresses, panel discussions and best practice case studies from India and world-wide featuring experts, policymakers, researchers and practitioners from such organisations as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), State Governments of Maharashtra and Delhi, Mumbai and Delhi Police, Synergie, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI), HumanQind, World Bank, AIP Foundation, ImagineLaw and IndiaRAP.

Jigesh participated in a panel discussion on Safer Roads for Children which explored safe school zones, safety near highways, safe commutes to school, safe road behaviour and speed management.

IndiaRAP and local partners have been using the free Star Rating for Schools tool to assess the safety of more than 80 schools across the country and inform evidence-based safety improvements which protect children on their journey to school each day. Jigesh’s shared programme experience provided valuable insights.

The award-winning Star Rating for Schools is an evidence-based tool for measuring, managing and communicating the risk children are exposed to on a journey to school. It supports quick interventions that save lives and prevent serious injuries from day one. The tool is in use across 55 countries improving the safety of school zones world-wide.
