Abstract: This study uses the tool developed by the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) called “Star Rating for Schools” or SR4S. It is a systematic and evidence-based tool for assessing and managing the risks children are exposed to during their school journeys. In line with the 2nd Decade of Action for Road Safety’s target for new roads to be at least 3-star or better, this study assesses 25 and 41 schools in Zamboanga City and Valenzuela City respectively, using SR4S tool.
The process starts with on-site survey of the chosen road sections that serve as access points for students going to their respective schools. Critical points are coded and analyzed using the SR4S web application. Star ratings are then generated. After which, critical road attributes are identified. Interventions are then virtually simulated, whether they would improve a road’s star rating and score or not, using the system demonstrator feature.
