What’s coming at the end of November?

As the world enters the new United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026–2035), Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) is preparing updates to help you better assess and improve road safety for children walking and cycling to school.

The process stays largely the same, with two main changes.

Whats new?

1. Additional road attributes on the coding page: These cover bicyclist peak hour flow, cycling facilities, intersection channelisation, roadside objects and distances, so you can assess cycling risk alongside pedestrian risk. If you only need pedestrian star ratings, set bicycle flow to “not present” and no bicycle star rating will be generated. A new “Zero–Star” rating band, shown in purple, will also be introduced. It identifies extremely high-risk road sections that the 1-Star band previously grouped with other high-risk conditions, helping authorities prioritise the most dangerous locations for immediate action.

2. New questions about bulk upload when you set up a new project: Large projects can enter school details and coding for many locations in a .csv template and upload them all at once with the bulk upload function. This suits projects covering hundreds of schools or whole school routes.

What you need to do

  1. Watch the new videos. We are preparing some instructional recordings on the new attributes and bulk upload. If you have already completed the SR4S Online Course, you do not need to repeat it. Just watch the new videos to update your knowledge.
  2. Use the updated SR4S Coding Guide and Coding Form when coding.
  3. Check the SR4S website e SR4S LinkedIn news page often for previews, FAQs and resources.

When do you need to do it?

All materials, including the updated Coding Guide, Coding Form and videos, are planned for release with the upgrades, potentially on 26 November 2026, World Sustainable Transport Day.

Thank you for being part of the SR4S community as we make journeys to school safer for every child.
