Thousands of Student Voices Help Shape Safer School Journeys in Vietnam

Through the Google.org-funded AI&Me: Leveraging AI Tools for Road Safety Impact project and the Fondation Botnar funded Donner aux jeunes les moyens de vivre dans des villes agréables à vivre project, AIP Foundation and iRAP have released the latest Application d'engagement des jeunes (YEA) results, providing local stakeholders with valuable new evidence to support safer journeys to school.

At the heart of the project are the voices of young people. Students from 18 schools across Vĩnh Long et An Giang actively participated in the Youth Engagement App (YEA), sharing their experiences and perceptions of safety along their daily journeys to school. Their contributions generated close to 50,000 location-specific observations, including more than 36,000 submissions from Vĩnh Long et 15,000 from An Giang, creating a unique youth-led dataset that captures how children experience road safety in their communities

These activities build on the first phase of the project, which used large-scale data analysis to identify locations where children may face elevated road safety risks. Through a nationwide Analyse des Big Data process, hundreds of schools were assessed using mobility, demographic, and contextual data to identify priority areas for further investigation. Based on these findings, Vĩnh Long and An Giang were selected as focus provinces, enabling the project team to combine data-driven targeting with detailed local assessments and youth engagement activities. Students participated using the latest version of the Youth Engagement App, which introduced several enhancements to improve both the user experience and the value of the data collected. These upgrades streamlined data collection, improved usability, and strengthened analytical capabilities, helping stakeholders gain deeper insights into how young people experience their journeys to and from school. By transforming thousands of student observations into actionable evidence, YEA complements technical road safety assessments and ensures that children’s perspectives play a central role in identifying priorities for safer school environments.

The newly released YEA Packages, developed with the support of Google.org and Botnar Foundation, are now available for schools, local authorities, researchers, road safety practitioners and anyone who wants to contribute to make the roads safer for youth.
