EPR, in partnership with the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT), the Transport Regulatory Agency of the State of Minas Gerais (Artemig) and iRAP, has launched the CONVIVER Program in Brazil to strengthen road safety and improve safety around more than 200 schools using the Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) methodology.<\/p>\n
The CONVIVER Program was officially launched on 10 July 2026 at the historic Autom\u00f3vel Clube de Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, bringing together government agencies, road operators and road safety experts in a shared commitment to creating safer journeys for children and reducing road trauma through evidence-based action.<\/p>\n
The initiative addresses a significant global road safety challenge. According to the World Health Organization, road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young people aged 5 to 29 years, with around 500 children losing their lives every day in preventable road crashes. Through the CONVIVER Program, EPR and its partners aim to apply proven, evidence-based approaches to help create safer journeys for students and reduce risks in school environments<\/p>\n
EPR operates road concessions across the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais and Paran\u00e1 and developed the initiative to strengthen road safety culture and promote collaboration between public institutions, private organisations and civil society. Through the program, EPR professionals trained in the SR4S methodology will lead assessments of more than 200 schools located near concessioned roads, working alongside municipalities, schools and local communities to identify risks and opportunities for improvement.<\/p>\n
In Minas Gerais, the first phase of the program will be implemented in 23 state and municipal schools across municipalities served by EPR\u2019s four road concessions, in partnership with 18 education departments. The initiative has the potential to benefit around 10,000 students annually, with assessments helping to identify opportunities for infrastructure, crossing, signage and traffic management improvements around participating schools.<\/p>\n
Developed by iRAP, the Star Rating for Schools methodology provides a practical and evidence-based framework for measuring and improving the safety of roads around schools. The methodology helps identify risks faced by children walking, cycling or travelling to school and supports informed decision-making to implement targeted safety improvements. By assessing road infrastructure and the surrounding environment, SR4S enables partners to prioritise investments that can save lives and prevent serious injuries.<\/p>\n
Speaking about the initiative, Julio Urzua, iRAP\u2019s Strategic Project Director, welcomed the collaboration and its potential to create lasting impact for communities across Brazil.<\/p>\n

As assessments commence across participating schools, the CONVIVER Program is expected to generate valuable data and insights that will help guide future investments and interventions. By combining local knowledge with internationally recognised road safety methodologies, the initiative demonstrates how collaboration and evidence-based action can help create a world free of high-risk roads.<\/p>\n
