The teachers received capacity-building training on the urgency of road safety, mechanisms for engaging young people, and an introduction to the Youth Engagement App (YEA) and Star Rating for Schools (SR4S).

These teachers were from three pilot schools selected through a Big Data Screening (BDS) mechanism, which ranked road safety around schools in Surakarta from the highest to the lowest. The three schools were: SMAN 4 Surakarta, SMA Regina Pacis Surakarta, and SMPN 12 Surakarta.

Director of Transportologi, Sukma Larastiti, stated that traffic crashes remain one of the leading causes of death among youth aged 15–29. This poses a potential risk to children who have school activities every day.

This requires innovative solutions to prevent youth from becoming traffic crash victims. The AI&ME program is designed to address this challenge in a unique way by involving youth as active “agents” in road safety assessments.

“Youth are not merely the object of a policy. They not only assess but are also capable of proposing improvements, advocating to relevant authorities, and encouraging other youth to join this movement,” said Sukma in her opening remarks.

During this training, teachers developed follow-up plans to conduct road safety training for students at their respective schools. Students will report road safety risks around their schools using YEA. The data collected through YEA will then be analyzed to identify locations with significant safety concerns reported by students, which will be selected for SR4S assessments. The SR4S assessment results will help determine recommendations for improvements to make roads safer for young people. This effort is a crucial step toward creating a more livable city in Surakarta.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://starratingforschools.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/ToT_1-scaled.jpg” title_text=”ToT_1″ _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Images credit: Transportologi

Ugik Sugiharti, a high school supervisor at the Central Java Provincial Education Office Region VII, stated that the implementation of YEA is highly beneficial for making policies regarding road safety.

“YEA provides valuable data to inform policies that prioritize communities and road users.
