_module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>National capacity building and more than 18,000km of iRAP assessments have recently been supported by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thairap.com\/\">ThaiRAP<\/a>, working in partnership with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.doh.go.th\/\">Department of Highways<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CYCT.Thailand\/\">Children and Youth Council.<\/a>\u00a0These efforts will inform lifesaving action to improve road safety in Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>In the last six months, ThaiRAP has supported an important Department of Highways\u2019 (DOH) project with three key outcomes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The completion of an iRAP assessment of 18,129km of national highways and the development of Safer Road Investment Plans to inform strategic investment.<\/li>\n<li>The training of 124 DOH staff in the iRAP methodology and coding, fostering local expertise for ongoing analysis and ViDA insights.<\/li>\n<li>Local system development aligned to the iRAP methodology to support the calculation of risk scores and Star Ratings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>In addition, following an invitation by the Children and Youth Council of Bangkok, ThaiRAP supported the training of 45 students in iRAP Star Ratings.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop lifted students\u2019 awareness of road infrastructure safety and the role that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/starratingforschools.org\/\">Star Rating for Schools (SR4S)<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/starratingforschools.org\/youth-engagement-app\/\">Youth Engagement App (YEA)<\/a>\u00a0can have in supporting risk analysis, advocacy and most importantly, evidence-based safety improvements at the roadside.<\/p>\n<p>It may be the promising start of a future programme of nation-wide annual training courses in SR4S and YEA, delivered by ThaiRAP and the Council.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/resources.irap.org\/CRM\/Asia_Pacific\/Thailand\/2022-27_Thai_Master_Plan_ENG.pdf?_ga=2.23068413.739461746.1702434738-263816062.1690758704\">Thailand\u2019s Road Safety Master Plan 2022-2027<\/a>\u00a0(led by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Ministry of Interior) sets targets under Strategy Three to \u201cDevelop a safe environment and sustainable transport,\u201d increase the proportion of 3-star roads and train local staff.<\/p>\n<p>ThaiRAP\u2019s capacity building efforts are supporting implementation of the Master Plan and an ever-growing cohort of road safety practitioners, policy-makers and advocates skilled and knowledgeable in road safety assessment and risk reduction to eliminate Thailand\u2019s highest risk roads.<\/p>\n<p>Kasem Choocharukul, ThaiRAP Lead and Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Chulalongkorn University said, \u201cWe are excited to commence the new year and work with partners to apply their learnings for safer roads in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThaiRAP is working with the DOH and Department of Rural Roads (DRR) to apply the new baseline Star Ratings to their budget allocation processes, optimising investment in infrastructure improvements that can save the most lives and serious injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ThaiRAP was recognised in 2022 with a Prime Minister\u2019s Award for Road Safety. ThaiRAP partner activity has assessed over 150,000 km of roads and designs over time, including motorways and 10 schools, influencing the safety of US$1.6 million of road infrastructure investment.
