Subsequently, three school zones in Balti, Singerei, and Ungheni municipalities saw significant upgrades particularly safer crossings for vulnerable road users (VRUs), leading to a safety level improvement to 4-5 stars.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Safe crossings &#8211; safe journeys&#8221; project, implemented by the<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fia.com\/members\/region\/europe-7\/country\/MD\">Automobile Club of Moldova (ACM)<\/a> <\/strong>aimed to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Implement safe and sustainable low-cost interventions to transform three pedestrian crossings in the three targeted localities in Moldova &#8211; Balti, Ungheni and Singerei.<\/li>\n<li>Improve urban mobility and the sustainability of VRU infrastructure.<\/li>\n<li>Address the needs of all road users, prioritizing schoolchildren and those with limited mobility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u201cVasile Alecsandri\u201d Lyceum in Ungheni<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ACM joined forces with school management and local authorities to implement several tactical urbanism interventions to improve the safety of the nearby pedestrian crossing for &#8220;Vasile Alecsandri&#8221; Lyceum:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Established a 30 km\/h zone;<\/li>\n<li>Clearly marked the pedestrian crossing;<\/li>\n<li>Installed plastic bollards to prevent parking within 10 meters of the crossing, giving drivers a clearer view;<\/li>\n<li>Lowered curbs and constructed access slopes on both sides for easier access for people with limited mobility;<\/li>\n<li>Installed new traffic signs such as \u201cAttention, children\u201d, \u201cPedestrian crossing\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These interventions improved the safety of the crossing with an increased star rating from 4.8-star to 5.7-star, reflecting the reduced operating speed, improved visibility, and enhanced accessibility for pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/starratingforschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Vasile-Alecsandri-Lyceum-in-Ungheni-Before-and-After-1.png&#8221; title_text=&#8221;\u201cVasile Alecsandri\u201d Lyceum in Ungheni Before and After 1&#8243; show_in_lightbox=&#8221;on&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/starratingforschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Vasile-Alecsandri-Lyceum-in-Ungheni-Before-and-After-2.png&#8221; title_text=&#8221;\u201cVasile Alecsandri\u201d Lyceum in Ungheni Before and After 2&#8243; show_in_lightbox=&#8221;on&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cDimitrie Cantemir\u201d Lyceum in Singerei<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The SR4S assessment conducted in Dimitrie Cantemir\u201d Lyceum in Singerei indicated a 3.3-star rating. While not the most hazardous, there was still room for improvement. ACM collaborated with local authorities to implement safety enhancements around the main pedestrian crossing used by students.<\/p>\n<p>These measures included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Established a 30 km\/h zone;<\/li>\n<li>Narrowed the pedestrian crossing using bollards, shortening the distance students need to cross;<\/li>\n<li>Installed plastic bollards to prevent parking within 5 meters of the crossing, giving drivers a clearer view;<\/li>\n<li>Applied reflective markings and painted the sidewalks with a colored inscription &#8220;SCHOOL&#8221; to increase awareness;<\/li>\n<li>Installed new traffic signs such as \u201cAttention, children\u201d, \u201cPedestrian crossing\u201d;<\/li>\n<li>Constructed access ramps from the sidewalks for easier access for people with limited mobility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Following these interventions, the star rating of the pedestrian crossing increased from 3.3 to 4.8 stars, thanks to the reduction in operating speed and the improvement in visibility and accessibility.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/starratingforschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Dimitrie-Cantemir-Lyceum-in-Singere-Before-and-After-1.png&#8221; title_text=&#8221;\u201cDimitrie Cantemir\u201d Lyceum in Singere Before and After 1&#8243; show_in_lightbox=&#8221;on&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/starratingforschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Dimitrie-Cantemir-Lyceum-in-Singere-Before-and-After-2.png&#8221; title_text=&#8221;\u201cDimitrie Cantemir\u201d Lyceum in Singere Before and After 2&#8243; show_in_lightbox=&#8221;on&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cSpiridon Vangheli\u201d primary school nr.21<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The pedestrian crossing near \u201cSpiridon Vangheli\u201d primary school nr.21 in Balti, used daily by students from two lyceums and a kindergarten, received a low 2.0-star rating due to its location in a busy junction with high operating speed.<\/p>\n<p>Taking the initiative, ACM collaborated with school management, local authorities, and the police to address this concern through the following measures:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Established a 30 km\/h zone;<\/li>\n<li>Installed school zone warning signs and road markings to alert drivers;<\/li>\n<li>Redesigned the intersection by adding a dedicated pedestrian crossing on the side road;<\/li>\n<li>Improved the sidewalks for better walking conditions;<\/li>\n<li>Installed pedestrian guardrails on both sides of the crossing for added safety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These significant interventions transformed the crossing from a high-risk zone to a much safer environment. This positive impact extends to parents, grandparents, friends, neighbors, and especially those with limited mobility.<\/p>\n<p>Educational activities and awareness campaigns were conducted alongside the infrastructure improvements, creating a holistic safety approach.<\/p>\n<p>The project&#8217;s success was made possible by the financial support of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fia.com\/\">FIA<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiafoundation.org\/\">FIA Foundation<\/a> (FIA Road Safety Grant Programme).
