The <\/span><\/span>Aleatica<\/span>\u202fFoundation\u202f<\/span><\/span>has successfully implemented its \u201c#<\/span>SeguroEsCool<\/span>” program, aimed at improving road safety around three public schools in Naucalpan, <\/span>State<\/span> of Mexico. This initiative <\/span>utilized<\/span> tactical urbanism principles to enhance pedestrian safety and reduce traffic-related risks for students and vulnerable road users.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In collaboration with the Naucalpan municipal government and companies 3M and <\/span>Intertr\u00e1fico<\/span>, the interventions targeted three schools: Escuela Militar de Transmisiones, Escuela <\/span>Secundaria<\/span> Benito Ju\u00e1rez, and Escuela <\/span>Secundaria<\/span> Isidro Fabela.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Using the Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) tool, which evaluates school road safety on a scale from 1.0 to 5.0-star band based on pedestrian infrastructure quality and vehicle speed \u2014<\/span> the program assessed and improved conditions at:<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Escuela Militar de Transmisiones<\/span><\/b>: <\/span>Originally rated at a critical 1.6 stars, the school underwent significant safety upgrades, including improved signage, a flashing traffic light, designated pedestrian zones, and a speed limit reduction to 20km\/h. As a result, its rating increased to 3.8 stars, a 138% improvement.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Escuela <\/span>Secundaria<\/span> Benito Ju\u00e1rez<\/span><\/span><\/strong>:<\/strong> <\/span><\/span>Three locations around the school were assessed, with <\/span>an initial<\/span> average star rating of 2.6. Safety interventions, including <\/span>raised <\/span>pedestrian crossings, reinforced signage<\/span> and <\/span>markings<\/span>, and<\/span> a speed limit reduction to 20km\/h, were implemented. As a result, the school’s rating improved to 4.1 stars<\/span>, <\/span>a 57% increase.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Escuela <\/span>Secundaria<\/span> Isidro Fabela<\/span><\/span>: <\/span><\/span><\/strong>Two <\/span>locations<\/span> surrounding the school were evaluated, receiving <\/span>an initial<\/span> average rating of 3.6 stars.<\/span> <\/span>Enhancements, including speed calming measures, improved lighting, upgraded signage, and a speed limit reduction to 20km\/h, increased the rating to 4.7 stars<\/span>, <\/span>a 30% improvement.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

A <\/span>video<\/span><\/a> featuring testimonials captured local sentiments: \u201cPublic transport often speeds here, so these interventions really help,\u201d said one resident. Another added, \u201cIt\u2019s great for slowing down cars\u2014they used to pass by too fast.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tactical Urbanism in Action<\/span><\/b>
<\/span>The interventions used high-quality, durable materials and focused on creating safer pedestrian environments. The SR4S tool proved effective in identifying weaknesses and measuring progress, offering a clear benchmark for success.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
